Running around the internet I found this picture. This is definitely close to the image I have in my head. Look at these gentlemen. Dirty, smiling, and all in suits (yes even the guy with the jumpsuit) and in flat caps. I don't know what these men did for a living but it didn't matter. Suit jacket, waistcoat, cap, tie or bow-tie.
This is pride in who they are, what they do, and how they look. Maybe I'll find this, first with a hat, then I'm thinking a vest though it may hard to find a high cut, single breasted vest with no lapel that I don't have to sew myself or take out a second mortgage to buy.

of mice and hats
So sometimes a new beginning can start with something as simple as a new hat. I've wanted to change things up for myself for a while and one of the ways I have chosen to do so is by modifying the way I dress. Typically I find myself, day after day, dressing in the same way not because I want to but because I must. Jeans and a polo (as seen in the picture) is the uniform I wear but it doesn't feel right.
The hat in the picture is a new edition. The flat cap. Anytime I've thought about it the imagery of 'the working man' has come to mind. Particularly for me it draws out the picture of a gentleman from the 1920's, a man with his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up (as short sleeve dress shirts had yet to become a thing), always wearing a hat, a vest, and probably a mandarin collarless shirt. He may be clean or grimy, he my not have been as formal as the upper class gents he worked for, but he wore these clothes with pride in himself and pride in his work and of course for those special occasions he had a suit with which he could dress to impress.
With this imagery in mind I am planning to start changing my lifestyle; to move from clothes that make me feel cocooned and drab to a style that reflects my work ethic and something that shows I have pride in how I get things done as well as pride in myself. Doesn't sound too crazy right? Well I guess we'll see.
This journey starts with a hat, a simple hat for a simple guy who wants to explore a radical shift in his style and maybe more along the way.
